Abstract: This paper describes a comparison of the fatigue performance of a 50 penetration grade bitumen and a bitumen-filler mastic determined using oscillatory shear loading and direct uniaxial tension-compression loading. The oscillatory shear test has been performed by means of a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) using both controlled strain and stress loading modes. The uniaxial tests have consisted of two testing geometries, namely a conventional cylindrical arrangement and a hemi-spherical configuration. Fatigue relationships versus initial stress level have been produced for both the binder and mastic using the DSR and the two uniaxial tests. However, there is a large difference in the slopes of the best-fit lines between those obtained for the DSR fatigue and those for the conventional and hemi-spherical platen uniaxial tests. In addition the uniaxial fatigue test shows a considerable difference between the results for pure bitumen and those for the bitumen/filler mixture whereas the DSR fatigue test does not.
