Abstract: Several types of SBS modifiers were used with two different base bitumen binders to formulate eight different polymer modified binders (PMB). These PMBs were then tested to determine both the Superpave M320 and MP1a critical cracking temperatures (Tcr). This paper summarizes the effect of these various modifiers on low temperature cracking of pavements as predicted from the Tcr. The paper will specifically discuss the impact of compatibility of base asphalt binders on the various SBS modifiers and its eventual effect on performance. Also discussed in the paper is a brief summary of the status of the Superpave MP1a specification as well as current research issues pertaining to the Direct Tension Test (DTT). The paper will conclude by critically examining the difference between the Superpave M320 and MP1a specifications as related to the SBS modification.
