Abstract: This paper describes a proposed fatigue based design methodology for asphaltic mixes applied on orthotropic steel bridge decks. It is known that the strain levels in the asphalt layer exhibit extremely high values ( 1000 µm/m) compared with the strain levels generally encountered in ordinary asphaltic pavements (50-200 µm/m). The proposed methodology takes into consideration the dependency of the mix stiffness not only on temperature and loading time, but also on the strain level. Furthermore, it caters for the variation of the mix stiffness in a fatigue test with the change of the strain level. The procedure requires the determination of the relationship between the mix stiffness, loading time, temperature and the strain level for the mix of interest. It is also required to express the number of load repetitions to failure in a fatigue test as a function of the strain level and the mix stiffness. By using an iteration procedure the interaction between the mix stiffness and the strain level can reasonably be assessed. Application of the procedure on a mastic asphalt mix, which was used for the resurfacing of the Moerdijk Bridge in the Netherlands in 2000, showed that this interaction between the mix stiffness and the strain level might have a significant influence in estimating the life span of asphaltic surfacings.
