Abstract: A three-year research study was sponsored by Texas Department of Transportation to evaluate the performance of both hot and cold poor sealants under different conditions. The study included investigating parameters such as the cost effectiveness, the ease and safety of installation, and the performance of various sealants. The study included three cold pour and four hot pour sealants. Eight different roads with a total of 33 different test sections were crack-sealed between January and April 2001. The evaluation was conducted under two different cases. In one case, the sealed roads were directly exposed to traffic and climate during the evaluation period. In the second case, the roads were sealed chip-sealed in the same year that the sealant was applied. The reason for the latter case was to evaluate the potential of various crack sealants for bleeding through the overlaying surface material. Furthermore, a survey was conducted in 21 districts of Texas and in nine different states regarding their crack sealing practice. This was a comprehensive survey including topics such as method of cleaning cracks, ease of installation, and type of sealants used. The level of satisfaction in terms of effectiveness, performance, safety, and cost were also evaluated through this survey.
