Abstract: An experimental investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects of reinforcing an Asphalt Concrete (AC) overlay with stiff geogrids as a means to mitigate reflective cracking when placed over concrete pavement joints or cracks. The primary objectives of this research were: (a) to evaluate the growth and propagation of the reflection cracks under cyclic loadings, and (b) to assess the effects of placement location of the geogrid within the overlay on the propagation of reflection cracks. Results indicate that for all testing conditions, and geogrid locations, specimens reinforced with the Tensar BX 1500 geogrid or the Amoco PetroGrid offered greater resistance to the formation and propagation of reflection cracks when compared to unreinforced specimens. The Fabric Effectiveness Factor gradually increased with increasing Embedment Factor suggesting that the grid is more beneficial when placed within the bottom half of the overlay. In addition, it was found that the specimens with geogrid embedded within the bottom of the specimen performed better than the specimens with the geogrid attached to the bottom with a tack coat.
