Abstract: This research studied the relation between the mechanical characteristics and the crack growth parameters of high modulus asphalt concrete (HMAC) for base layers. The first phase concerned the HMAC performing characteristics, using the dynamic and the resilient modulus as reference parameters. The lab tests followed the ASTM D3496 and D4123 rules, enlarging the temperature and frequency ranges in order to have a wider picture of the evolving performance of the materials. This allowed to individuate a characteristic performing parameter for HMAC. This characteristic parameter can be correlated to the cracking process through an analogous parameter. The second phase of the research aimed at individuating it. In the experimental phase, a 3 point bending test was applied on semi-circular specimens, recording the gap of the crack and its growth. For this goal, a digital image correlation method was used. Properly studied, it allowed to record the range of crack growth observed in the sample. Then, the two characteristic parameters individuated were analysed both one by one and in correlation. This allowed to individuate an experimental relationship between the performing behaviour and the crack growth parameters.
