Abstract: This paper describes the formulation and Finite Element (FE) implementation of a regularized 3-D continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model for a linear viscoelastic material, as well as its application to the simulation of crack initiation and propagation in asphalt concrete (AC) during monotonic and fatigue beam bending tests. The model parameters were identified with simple experiments. The proposed model is shown to be able to describe the failure process of asphalt concrete under both monotonic loading and repetitive loading conditions. It provides a step towards a new and inexpensive method for the simulation of reflective cracking.
