Abstract: This is the fifth in a series of RILEM conferences on cracking in pavements. The previous four conferences focused on reflection cracking. Due to the complexity of cracking in pavements, this conference is devoted to the mechanism, simulation, and laboratory and field measurements of crack initiation and propagation in pavements. To reflect our commitment to addressing the research needs in risk assessment and probabilities as well as prevention techniques, these topics were included as a subtitle for the conference

The call for papers for the fifth RILEM international conference has been a great success. This illustrates the growing interest in this topic and confirms the need for better modeling and prediction of crack initiation and propagation in pavements. We have received 150 abstracts, from which 83 papers were accepted after extensive peer review; each paper was reviewed by at least three referees. The conference proceedings provide a source of theoretical modeling, experimental approaches, field studies, and rehabilitation techniques of pavement cracks for the international community who are conducting research in this field. The conference proceedings are a true representation of the international contribution; the published papers are from 23 countries and 4 continents. This conference also marks a significant contribution from North America. This encouraged the organizing committee to plan the sixth RILEM conference in the United States.
