Abstract: Numerous reinforced concrete structures are constructed along roads, and thus exposed to a road environment. The road environment provides a harsh environment for reinforced concrete structures, with large variations in temperature and moisture conditions and in cold environments spread of de-icing salt containing chlorides. In this paper the road environment is described with the emphasis put on how chlorides from de-icing salt are influencing reinforced concrete structures. It is described how chlorides are transported from the road surface to the surroundings of the road and the response from concrete structures is exemplified. As an example of response in a road environment a number of reinforced concrete bridges around Göteborg on the west coast of Sweden have been examined for moisture conditions and chloride ingress. The results from the investigations show on large variations especially in chloride conditions and to some extent in moisture conditions. These variations are supposed to mainly depend on variations in the exposure conditions but also on the concrete properties and execution during construction.
