Abstract: Although several numerical models have been able to reproduce the development of the elastic modulus of cement pastes using the Finite Element Method at later ages, good agreement with results at setting time and a few hours after set has not been possible. Mesheffects and inaccurate representation of particle distribution in the microstructure are often described as the cause of these disagreements. This study presents methods that were developed to account for the inaccuracies from meshing of microstructure and the packing of the particles in the microstructure. Using vector-based approaches, it was possible to remove artificial contacts introduced between particles due to the limited resolution of meshing. Flocculation of particles, as is expected in real conditions, was also implemented in the simulations. The approaches used were found to be computationally inexpensive and effective in achieving a good agreement with the experimental results for several water-cement ratios and different cementitious systems.
