Abstract: Being able to predict the mechanical properties of Recycled Aggregate Concretes (RACs) is an essential requirement for Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCAs) to be considered as a feasible and sustainable alternative to the natural ones in structural concrete. In fact, since RCAs show quite different engineering properties compared with natural aggregates, mix design rules generally adopted for ordinary concrete can also not be applied in the case of RACs. The research presented herein is intended at providing a contribution for better understanding and making predictable the effects of RCAs on the resulting mechanical properties of RACs. A series of analytical formulations, suitable for a rational mix design of structural concrete made with RCAs, are proposed. These formulations take into account the physical properties of the constituents and the concrete mixture composition for predicting the time evolution of the concrete compressive strength. The formulations are calibrated on the results received from experimental tests carried out on both recycled aggregates and concrete mixtures, considering the variation of several aspects and parameters, such as the processing procedures, the source of origin of the RCAs, their replacement ratio, the water-to-cement ratio and, finally, the initial moisture condition of the coarse aggregates.
