Abstract: The last decades have shown beyond doubt that recycled materials can be accepted and have a broad demand. The economic crisis has hit many countries retarding the implementation of the practical application of the results of the research. In many countries the decline of construction activities and the diminution of demolition has conduced to a lack of CDW. This has not stopped the activity of researchers in this field with the publication of many papers. We can speak of a more scientifically approach of the knowledge of the properties, methods of design, relation with the durability not only in concrete but in several other fields. New products have been developed and the knowledge of ZTI and his relation with the nature of the recycled materials, the rheology of the mixtures, the use of additions and chemical admixtures has grown. In this invited lecture a summary of the general situation in research is exposed, with a special consideration of the problems related with origin, quality, durability and sustainability. A proposal for possible solutions based in the results of the research of our team is presented.
