Abstract: This paper deals with a micro-scale experimental investigation of a special class of cement-based materials reinforced by short random fibers called Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs). Initial findings on microstructure and morphology of this material that are based on environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) analysis are presented. A detailed information about composition and transitional zones on a micrometer scale is given. The micromechanical investigations of the material are performed by nanoindentation. These measurements provide us properties of individual components and transitional zones in ECC. The present investigation is done as an initial step toward prediction of long-term durability of ECCs.
