Abstract: This paper describes the application of lightweight cement boards as a basic component in exterior wall construction and finish systems in light-frame buildings. Two types of exterior wall construction and finish systems, namely, Direct-Applied Exterior Finish System (DEFS) and the Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS), in which the lightweight cement boards are commonly used, are introduced. Generic system designs for the exterior wall systems utilizing lightweight cement boards are presented. The distinctive features and properties of the lightweight cement boards that make them a product of choice in exterior wall construction and finish system designs are highlighted. Finally, case studies demonstrating the field use of lightweight cement boards in exterior wall construction and finish systems are presented. These case studies demonstrate the unique place of lightweight cement boards in exterior wall system designs used in a wide variety of building construction applications.
