Abstract: Engineered Cementitious Composites with Polyvinyl Alcohol fiber (PVA-ECC) have been developed for application to seismic resistant structural members. This material exhibits excellent characteristics such as damage reduction achieved by high tensile ductility and multiple cracking. This paper summarizes the structural capacity of reinforced PVA-ECC dampers (R/ECC damper) developed for vibration control in buildings. An experiment was conducted to clarify the structural performance. Seven small dampers and one large damper were designed to fail in flexure. As a result, all specimens showed flexural failure with a high deformation capacity of over 1/25 radian. The hysteresis characteristics, equivalent damping factor and failure mode are discussed in order to clarify the structural performance.
