Abstract: This paper evaluates the use of high-performance fiber reinforced cement composites (HPFRCCs) in seismic-resistant members with shear-dominated response as a means to enhance seismic performance and reduce or even eliminate the need for intricate transverse reinforcement detailing. Fibers used in HPFRCC materials include ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers, and steel twisted and hooked fibers. The ability of HPFRCC materials to increase strength, displacement capacity, and damage tolerance in members subjected to shear reversals is discussed. Based on experimental results, it can be concluded that HPFRCCs represent an attractive alternative to ensure adequate seismic performance of concrete members with shear-dominated behavior while allowing significant reductions or even elimination of transverse reinforcement detailing.
