Abstract: The present paper discusses contemporary building materials and the use of industrial by-product
building materials, and describes building materials recycling in Japan. A survey of
current literature and a questionnaire provided to major building-materials associations were
completed, and quantity data was collected to evaluate information including the amount of
materials; the volume of production and shipment; amount of discharge and recovery of end
materials (from production, construction, and demolition); and, recycling methods. The
building materials targeted by the present study are gypsum board, particle board, fiberboard,
glass wool, tiles, etc. The material flow was established based on the questionnaire results,
and the features and problems of recycling each type of material were examined.
