Abstract: This work describes the formulation of new cementitious materials starting from industrial
wastes or sub-products, such as sludges (generated in the Al-anodising and surface coating
industrial processes, potable water filtration/cleaning operations and the cutting process of
natural marble) and foundry sands. These materials are all classed as non-hazardous but are
produced in high daily amounts, which means high transportation costs for disposal. They
were fully characterised and chemical/mineralogical predictions were made based on their
location in the equilibrium diagram of the SiO 2-Al2O3-CaO ternary system, which are the
major oxide constituents.
Powder mixtures of the OPC and HAC types were prepared and fired at different
temperatures. For comparison, similar formulations were prepared with pre-treated and
commercially available natural raw materials and processed in similar conditions.
Compositional changes, as a function of the firing conditions, were assessed by XRD. The
setting behaviour of the optimised formulations was evaluated, as well as the evolution with
time of the mechanical strength.
