Abstract: The civil construction is an attractive market for use of by-products metallurgical. At the
same time, the recycling process provides the reduction of the environment contamination due
to improper disposal. Many studies have emphasized the use of slags as materials utilized in
soil stabilizer, landfill, road, Portland cement, concrete and mortar. However, few studies
have emphasized the use of magnesium slag as a construction’s material. The manufacturing
process of metallic magnesium produces a large volume of magnesium slag. Generally this
waste is dumped in open areas. This work evaluates the characteristics of a magnesium slag
generated in a metallurgical plant situated in Brazil. The physical and chemical properties,
mineralogical compounds and thermal analysis of the slag were evaluated. In order to
determine the material’s morphology, the slag were analyzed through a scanning electron
microscopy (SEM-EDS). This study emphasize the slag’ characteristics aiming its use as a
mineral admixture in mortar. Results shown that the magnesium slag presents same physical,
chemical and mineralogical characteristics similar to Portland cement.
