Abstract: This book is the proceedings of the international symposium on "Environment- Conscious Materials and Systems for Sustainable Development" held in Japan during the 59th RILEM week (2004). This international symposium is related to RILEM Technical Committee TC 192-ECM (Environment-Conscious Construction Materials and Systems) and RILEM TC 194-TDP (Application of Titanium Dioxide Photocatalyst to Construction Materials), which are concerned with the environment-conscious construction materials and systems, also photocatalysis technology for the future construction.
At present, the environmental problem becomes a common theme in the whole world. It is not already permitted to repeat the mass consumption and the mass disposal of resources. It has been required that resource conservation and maintenance of global environment which made energy-saving to be a key; the reduction of the discharge of wastes and the promotion of the recycling are attempted.
It must be considered that buildings and structures are long-lasting as social assets in urban areas. It is required that frames such as columns and beams of the buildings are high endurance. It is also required that the finishing materials retain the good appearance.
RILEM TCs 192-ECM and 194-TDP were established in 2001, and the basic consideration of the construction materials on environmental problems in the field began. In RILEM TC 192-ECM, the ideal way of the environment-conscious materials and construction systems has been discussed. In RILEM TC 194-TDP, the application of photocatalysis technology to construction matrials has been examined. In the conduct of the international symposium, RILEM TCs 192-ECM and 194-TDP started setting categories and other necessary activities of the symposium after two years of preparation, and the concrete plan was made.
