Abstract: Binary blends containing cement kiln dust (CKD) and fly ash class F were used to develop secondary cementitious binders through a new approach of mechanochemical treatment. The function of high energy milling fly ash in a vibratory mill, as an intermediate step before inter-grinding with CKD was found to be a more efficient regime in the activation of the CKD-fly ash systems. XRD test results revealed that interground mixtures containing separately ground fly ash resulted in a reduction of the peak areas of the mixture and an increased induced amor-phization. Properties including, rate of heat evolution, setting time, and compressive strength of the mixtures significantly improved. In addition, for equivalent total grinding times, sepa-rate grinding of fly ash resulted in a finer particle size distribution of the CKD-fly ash mix-tures.
