Abstract: It is important to improve durability of concrete, in order to maintain long-term serviceability in concrete structures. For this purpose, the authors paid attention to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which is water-soluble polymer, and made polymer-modified concrete with PVA. PVA prepared in this study (N-PVA) has high water resistance and excellent mechanical strength, and cannot be dissolved unless it is heated in the boiling water. However, little is known about N-PVA. Therefore, the authors attempted to make clear properties and applicability on the structure of N-PVA-modified concrete. At first, properties of N-PVA-modified concrete were investigated in laboratory test. As a result, strength and shrinkage characteristic of PVA-modified concrete was superior to that of normal concrete by the adequate curing. Furthermore, as field application, N-PVA-modified concrete was applied to a concrete depositing of the balustrade of the bridge under construction. At the same time, the authors prepared prototype specimens on the balustrade, compared with normal concrete on internal shrinkage characteristics for 1 year.
