Abstract: Stump and root (SR) of wood are one of major wooden wastes produced on the civil engineering works. In this paper, as the SR converted to useful resource, the fundamental properties of the SR and the SR's potentiality for the raw materials of wood based panels were discussed. SR and trunk of Japanese cedar, Sugi (Criptomeria japonica D.DON) were used in this study. The fundamental properties such as density, moisture content, bending strength and compressive strength of the SR were studied. Result showed that the SR had a high moisture content with over 200% based on oven dried specimen weight, a low density with less than 0.30g/cm3 at oven dried condition and low mechanical properties compared with the trunk. Finally, the weight and volume ratio of SR in whole tree (SR / trunk) were estimated. As the results, the weight ratio of the SR to the trunk was 40%, and the volume ratio was 50% or more. Based on the above-mentioned results, the processing and utilization of the SR for wood based panels were examined. As the results of the studies, the SR could be used for the raw materials of a conventional wood based panels same as the ordinary wood.
