Abstract: Wood is a natural environment-conscious material and expected to be used extensively for infrastructure in sustainable societies in the 21st century. As the forest stocks in industrialized countries are increasing, more use of wood is recommended from environmental aspect. Wood deteriorates in seawater due to marine borers, but this biodegradability makes an advantage in some situations. Possible applications of wood in port structures such as open wharves, partition seawalls for reclamation, fishing banks and so forth are described in this paper.
