Abstract: The traffic scenario in all metropolitan cities, in India is very complex in nature due to heterogeneous traffic conditions. This has resulted in lack of road safety and congestion, leading to many issues to both road users and pedestrians followed by excessive delay to moving vehicles at signalized intersections. The solution may be obtained by proper understanding of the problem and implementing the improvement schemes at various junctions. In this paper, an attempt is made to evaluate system delay which signifies the total loss of time due to additional time allocated to signal phases than what is required. This clearly indicates the total loss of time to all waiting vehicles for all the four roads of the junction under consideration. Excess green time results in loss of productive time as well as fuel loss. The accumulated loss of time for all vehicles is enormous and needs to be minimized to reduce noise and air pollution in addition to loss of productive time. Analysis indicates there is enough scope to reduce system delay by suitable traffic studies and adopting relevant parametric values in the signal time design.
