Abstract: Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) is an innovative technical achievement developed during the late 1980's in Japan. The core goal of this development was to achieve durable structures.
Since then considerable research and development has taken and turned this technology into a powerful tool for successfully completing complicated pours requiring high standards of durability and absolutely minimal defects. In many cases tangible cost savings have been achieved.
This continued development of SCC has been achieved due to recent advances in admixture technology including third generation polycarboxylate hyperplasticisers and viscosity modifiers. This paper, with particular focus on P.R. China, presents the development of state of the art admixture technology to match the needs of a rapidly growing and demanding concrete market ready to embrace the advantages of SCC. Selected local case studies will be presented to highlight how this admixture development and careful mix design has contributed to the successful introduction of SCC in our construction market.
