Abstract: Self-compacting concretes (SCC) are characterized by very high fluidity and cohesion, can be placed without any vibration at all. To achieve these properties, it is customary to use a high cement content, but resulting in the increase of the risk of thermal cracking related to the high heat development due to cement hydration. An alternate method is to partially replace cement with a supplementary cementitious material. This paper discusses the influence of fly ash on the heat of hydration of cement-based materials. The replacement levels of fly ash were 20%, 30%, and 40% by mass, respectively. Three types of different fineness fly ash were chosen. The tests of heat of hydration results show that the additional fly ash decreases the rate of heat of hydration of cementitious materials and the early heat of hydration, resulting in the decrease of adiabatic temperature rise of SCC. The fly ash also increases the dormant period, which is related to the setting time of mixture.
