Abstract: Polyaspartic esters (PAEs) based polyureas with various hard segment contents have been prepared by one-step mass polymerization and prepolymerization. Chemical composition and surface morphology have been investigated by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and atomic force microscope (AFM). The results of these characterizations indicate that hard segments of T1 which has 100% hard segment content self-assemble to form a continuous morphology, T2 (polyurea with 73% hard segment content) has higher microphase separation than T3 (with 60% hard segment content), and the hard segments and soft segments of T3 are more compatible than T2. Fractal dimensions of surfaces of these coatings have been analyzed by means of Height-Height Correlation Function (HHCF) based on both AFM topography images and phase images. The analyses show that T2 has the most unhomogeneous morphology and distribution of microphysical characters in the surface with the highest value of △h(the dispersion between the maximum and minimum height), Dt(the fractal dimension calculated based on the AFM topography images), △deg(the dispersion between the maximum and the minimum phase degree of the phase image) and Dp(the fractal dimension calculated based on the AFM phase image): 32.28nm, 2.254, 426.31mv and 2.74.
