Abstract: Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. However, the various required performance of UHPC, including high strength and toughness, self-compacting ability, and superior durability, often impose contradictory requirements on the mix parameters to be adopted. The multiple requirements of UHPC cannot meet by conventional mixture design methods. Therefore, new and effective mixture design principles and procedure are needed to achieve densely-compacted UHPC. This paper is a summary of recent work on design of UHPC, which aims at increasing the performance, sustainability, and energy-efficient of UHPC. Four basic principles, including reduction in porosity, improvement in microstructure,
enhancement in homogeneity, and increase in toughness are proposed to develop UHPC. Several mixture design methods based on empirical design, close packing model, and statistical factorial model, were presented.
