Abstract: It is found that, for ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) filled steel tube columns, the brittleness of UHPC can be overcome by sufficient confinement from steel tube. Furthermore, it is recommended that the load should be imposed only on concrete core to achieve the maximal tri-axial confinement effect for UHPC core. Therefore, this study presents finite element modelling (FEM) of circular UHPC filled steel tube stub columns under concentric
loading on the concrete core. ATENA-3D software was used to conduct the numerical analysis. The “CC3DNonLinCementitious2User” material model for concrete in ATENA-3D, with some modifications of material laws, was adopted to model for UHPC core with consideration of the confinement effect. The ultimate loads and load versus vertical strain curves obtained from FEM and test results were compared and verified. It can be observed that the columns
with thicker steel tube and higher confinement index show better strength and ductility, thus the sudden drop of loading after peak load can be prevented.
