Abstract: Due to low tensile strength and ductility of conventional concrete, concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures have limited application for tension even bending. In order to explore the full function of CFST tension members like chord of CFST truss girder, a mix proportion of reactive powder concrete (RPC) from ordinary materials was created and a series of direct
tension tests of reactive powder concrete-filled steel tubular (RPC-FST) members with different steel fiber admixture and curing regimes, were conducted. By comparing sectional resistances and axial rigidities of RPC-FST specimens with RPC as well as steel tube counterparts, a structural design method based on the formulas for conventional CFST tension member was discussed. It was shown from the test that RPC-FST composed of local materials had excellent tensile resistance, axial rigidity and ductility that met the structural requirements for CFST tension members in bridge engineering. The proposed practical algorithms well predict sectional resistances and axial rigidities of RPC-FST in tension.
