Abstract: A lightweight composite bridge deck system composed of steel deck and thin Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) layer is proposed to relieve damage in asphalt surfacing and fatigue cracking in steel decks. The piezoelectric (PZT) impedance technology is employed to detect the interfacial debonding defects between the steel deck and the UHPC layer. The experimental studies on a steel-UHPC slab with artificial defects in different sizes indicate that the variation of impedance-frequency curve of PZT can reflect the existence of local interfacial debonding failures.
