Abstract: Concrete, as a material strong in compression while weak in tension, is ideal for use in arch bridges because they are predominantly under compression. Concrete arch bridges are expected to be continuously built in the future for economy, aesthetics and structural behavior, such as high stiffness required for high speed railways. The material performance (mainly the strength) of concrete used in arch bridges increases continually. The last ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has been used in around 70 bridge load-bearing members. It is a trend to use UHPC in arch bridges in the future. In this paper, design and construction of three UHPC arch bridges are highlighted. The experimental research on UHPC arches and the trial design of UHPC arch bridges are also presented.
