Abstract: The demand for raw materials is growing very fast. Construction materials demand is growing
faster than those for other materials. Local scarcity of aggregates is becoming a reality in
many regions.
Most of the construction materials are accumulated in the earth crust as a stock of building
infrastructure and waste – which is one of the evidences of anthropocene - the actual flow of
waste available for recycling is low. This limits the circularity in the construction industry:
recycling is not enough to mitigate materials demand of construction industry.
Based on these findings, the paper discusses options to promote resource use efficiency in
construction as a tool to reduce demand for new raw materials.
