Abstract: The exponential economic growth of several countries with ensuing consumption of natural

resources of various nations has led to a parallel increasing generation of waste. From a circu-
lar economy point of view, efforts of different economic sectors have been observed, wherein

cost-effective solutions have been developed with the intention of reducing associated envi-
ronmental impacts and closing the loop of the supply chain. Nevertheless, such mindset is yet

to be seen in the construction industry of several countries, where the waste from construction

and demolition activities is still sent to landfills or, at best, subjected to basic processing pro-
cedures without regard to the output’s application in construction. In light of these difficulties,

this paper intends to enlighten key individuals within the construction industry that can fur-
ther drive the use recycled aggregates in the production of new concrete or other construction

materials incorporating them. The paper describes some of the main obstacles throughout this
process and the steps that can be taken to eliminate them. It also presents some key research
topics wherein gaps in knowledge still exist, which must be further developed to guide the
industry.
