Abstract: Construction field has contributed to generate a high amount of construction and demolition
debris and consume large volumes of natural resources increasing the environmental impact.
Many proposals, such as reducing cement content or reusing materials, have been widely
recognized as a mean to minimize the environmental degradation and numerous references to
sustainability have included in most codes of concrete structures.
Many authors have provided a high amount of experimental results in terms of mechanical
strengths and deformational properties and consequently, the behaviour of recycled concrete in
terms of material properties is well known nowadays. However, its usage in real applications is
not widespread in construction field. In order to change this trend and promote its use,
trustworthy guidelines are required to design structural concrete made with different content of
recycled coarse aggregates (RCA), which is the aim of this research.
Using experimental results from different own researches, most code-based expressions have
been modified to calculate the recycled concrete properties with the same approximation degree
as those of conventional ones, involving the RCA content and its differences in terms of density,
water absorption. Finally, these proposals are included in a methodology to design structural
concrete with different replacement percentages of RCA.
