Abstract: Sustainable building and development is a growing tendency in modern day construction
projects. Optimizing the use of raw materials and minimizing the environmental impact are
becoming important factors in project design. In line with this trend, the following article
assesses the potential recovery of electric arc furnace slag and its use as material fill in gabion
cages. Both technical and environmental aspects are considered to verify this application, which
is currently not considered in Spain. A series of durability and leaching tests are carried out to
verify the suitability of the use of electric arc furnace slag as the material fill in gabion cages.
The results conclude that the studied material complies with all the technical and environmental
specifications established by regional legislation.
