Abstract: The incorporation of pozzolanic materials for the manufacture of cement-based materials has
demonstrated the improvement in technical properties. This study analyzes the pozzolanic
properties of new industrial by-products. The possibility of using materials with cementing
characteristics (Olive Biomass Bottom Ash) as a substitute for traditional pozzolanic materials
in the manufacture of cement-based materials was analyzed.
The use of biomass bottom ash in different percentages as a partial substitute for raw
materials used in the manufacture of cement-based materials was studied, demonstrating the
feasibility of use of this by-product as a cementing material in three types of construction
materials: Biomass bottom ash as a replacement of cement in cement mortars, biomass bottom
ash as a replacement of cement in cement-treated granular materials and biomass bottom ash
as a replacement of natural aggregates in concrete.
This study evaluates the optimal percentage of substitution and the effect of the application of
biomass bottom ash on the mechanical behavior of the three materials studied.
The results of the technical and mechanical properties obtained by these new eco-efficient
cement-based materials made with olive biomass bottom ash demonstrate the technical
potential of this by-product as a material with pozzolanic characteristics.
