Abstract: This research work studies the physical and mechanical behavior of lightened gypsum made
with expanded and extruded polystyrene wastes (EPS and XPS respectively). For this, several
gypsum samples were prepared using different percentages of EPS and XPS waste (up to 4%)
based on the weight of gypsum and also reference samples (with no additions). These samples
were tested in the laboratory and the following tests were developed: dry density, surface
hardness, flexural strength and compressive strength. A comparative analysis evidenced that it
is viable preparing gypsum with addition of XPS and EPS waste. These compounds have
lower density than currently used lightweight gypsums, keeping similar mechanical strengths.
