Abstract: The objective of this study is the management of construction and demolition waste
(CDW) in the life cycle of residential buildings (LCRB), analyzing their quantification as well
as their economic and environmental evaluation. Based on a quantification model of CDW
already successfully implemented by the authors, improvements are introduced in order to
evaluate projects in all stages of LCRB, from the urbanization of the land, construction,
rehabilitation works and even demolition. A case study of a residential buildings project in
Huelva, Spain, is analyzed. Finally, the classification and quantities of CDW generate a
carbon footprint (CF) at each stage of the LCRB. The results show that the largest amounts of
the CDW generated come from the urbanization works and in the demolition stage, while the
CF has its greatest impact on the machinery used for the collection and transport of the CDW.
These results show that the integral environmental impact of these projects is quantifiable,
introducing an extrapolating method that has been incorporated in municipalities of Seville
(Spain) as part of the CDW management systems.
