Abstract: Concrete behaviour at high temperature can present several phenomena such as spalling, and
a dramatic loss of mechanical properties. Recycled aggregates concretes (RAC) being
different from natural aggregate concrete in many ways – higher porosity, three interfacial
transition zones, higher hydrates proportion – it is essential to study their high temperature
behaviour. Firstly, this work analyses the influence of recycled aggregates on heat
propagation within the concrete and the impact of the recycled aggregates substitution rate on
the concrete thermal deformation during heating. Then, after heating, the evolution of RAC
mechanical residual properties with temperature is investigated and analyzed through the
crack network development. The behaviour of the different types of interfaces is highlighted.
Finally, the spalling resistance is investigated on three series of high and normal strength
concretes; 0R-0R, 0-15R and 0-30R. The first number represents the replacement percentage
by weight of normal fine aggregate by recycled fine aggregate; the second number represents
the replacement percentage of normal coarse aggregate by recycled coarse aggregate. The
results confirm that one of the key parameter is the concrete moisture content and otherwise
show a favorable influence of the simultaneous presence of 30% of fine and coarse recycled
aggregate on the spalling resistance of concrete.
