Abstract: Intrinsic characteristics of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) make difficult to establish the
real effective water level when these aggregates are used to produce new concrete. It is shown
here that the exchange of water between the recycled aggregate and the new concrete mixture
during the mixing is more complex than generally considered. The water can get into or get
out from the RCA, depending on their initial level of moisture. There are cases were the
direction of the water migration change at different stages of the new concrete mixing.
Therefore, the level of the effective water decrease and/or increase during the mixing and
tends to stabilize once the uniform new concrete is obtained. The presented experiments
analyse the influence on the water migration kinetics during mixing and on the level of
stabilization of the effective water at the end of the mixing, of, on the one hand, the initial
moisture of the RCA and of the type of pores filled with water in these aggregate, and, on the
other hand, of the total water in the new concrete mixture.
