Abstract: The measurement of the moisture content in concrete is an important issue for several
applications in the construction industry. Calibration procedures are needed for qualifying
quantitative methods, especially for indirect methods. A procedure for preparing concrete
samples with well characterized and homogeneously distributed moisture contents has been
proposed in order to provide the needed calibration samples. The methodology basically
consists of a drying step from the water-saturated state, to the target moisture content. This is
followed-up by a homogenization step, and an optional measurement of the quasi-equilibrium
relative humidity. This last step allows defining the conditions for keeping unaltered the
moisture state during subsequent work. The validity of the procedure is being checked in the
framework of a round-robin test of RILEM TC 248-MMB, by using several techniques for
measuring the moisture content and for checking the homogeneity of the moisture distribution
within the samples.
