Abstract: Moisture drying kinetics of a porous material is of significant importance for understanding
interactions between water molecules and the solid substrate and evaluating transport
properties of the material. In the present study, we measured moisture loss of cylindrical
hardened cement pastes and mortars and interpreted the data via classic drying models and a
fractional kinetic (FK) approach. The parameters of the FK model were featured to
characterize the drying profiles. It showed excellent agreements between the measured data
and the FK model in both the early and late drying periods, suggesting the complexity of the
drying mechanisms of the cement-based porous materials. Extensive and exhaust tests are
required to test the robust of the FK approach and extend its utilities in many fields of porous
materials (e.g. microstructure characterization and moisture transport) in the future.
