Abstract: When installing additional insulation in ventilated attics, the general recommendation in
Denmark is to install a vapour barrier if the total amount of insulation material is more than
􀀔􀀘􀀓􀀃 􀁐􀁐􀀃 􀁚􀁌􀁗􀁋􀀃 􀁄􀀃 􀈜-value of 0.04 W/m·K, regardless of the insulation materials hygroscopic
properties or moisture content in the indoor air. To test if this recommendation can be refined,
a full scale test building is established. The test building has different ceilings with variations
in insulation materials (thickness and hygroscopic properties) and vapour barrier (yes or no).
The examination is done under the impact of the natural Danish outdoor climate while the
indoor climate is controlled after the European humidity class 2 and 3.
In this paper, the construction design of the 7x15 meter full scale test building will be
described; in addition there will be a discussion of the choice of the six different test ceilings
and the two selected indoor climates, which the ceilings are tested against. There will also be
a presentation of the selected equipment and measuring points to register the moisture
variation in the test ceilings and finally the measured wood moisture content in the attic for
the first half of 2016 will be presented.
