Abstract: As a new class of fibre reinforced cementitious materials, mechanical behaviours of SHCC
materials are characterized by various factors. Therefore, they are capable to be improved by
various measures for various application purposes. Matrix tailoring is an encouraging
technique to improve their mechanical behaviours. In the present paper, the Fly ash (FA) is
mixed into ECC to reduce the crack tip toughness by reducing the interface bond. The
research results indicate that cement replacement FA can sharply reduce the interface bond.
Besides, high FA content provided enough initial faults, and it also reduced the interfacial
bond, therefore leading to an increased complementary energy, Hence, achieving a more
ductile behaviour. FA enhances the bridging function of fibre by extending matrix flaws. This
also indicates that the particle shape of admixture is also very important for tensile behaviour.
