Abstract: The current paper traces the evolution of civil engineering research on historical structures at IIT Madras from its genesis in the mid-1990s up until the present-day. The motivation behind involvement in this challenging inter-disciplinary field, the establishment of a dedicated facility at IIT Madras to tackle the national grand challenge of protection of India's built heritage, and the range of past and present exciting research problems and their outcomes are presented in the paper.
