Abstract: Reactive magnesium oxide (MgO) has gained interest for its binding properties in various cementYbased applications. Currently, the most common production method of MgO involves the calcination of MgYbearing minerals. As the physical properties of MgO can significantly vary with the type of precursor and calcination conditions, it is critical to establish clear linNs between the production parameters and properties of the final product. This will enable MgO producers and end users to understand and predict the performance of MgO as a binder or an additive in various applications. This study investigated the influence of calcination conditions on the Ney properties of MgO and established linNs between these properties and production conditions. This was achieved via the production of MgO under a range of calcination temperature and residence times and its detailed characterization in terms of its reactivity, SSA, crystal size, morphology, and hydration capability. Categorization of MgO under 3 main groups was proposed according to the calcination conditions and the properties of the final product.
