The Influence of Calcined Clay Substitution on the Properties of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3)

Nowadays, replacing clinker with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is becoming widespread because of environmental concerns. Calcined clay and limestone were used as SCMs in this study. LC3-65(2:1) corresponding to a blended cement containing 65% of clinker, approximately 5% of gypsum and 30% of SCMs fixing the ratio of calcined clay to limestone to 2:1 was used in this study. The replacement of SCMs accelerated the hydration of clinker and enhanced AFm phase formation. The compressive strength of mortar was comparable to the plain PC from 7 days onwards. There was a porosity refinement of the paste incorporating with calcined clay and limestone as compared to the pure PC. LC3 blended cement showed higher resistance to the chloride ingress and the proper curing time can improve the carbonation resistance of LC3 blended cement similar to the plain PC.
