Abstract: There has recently been much attention paid to alkali-activated cements, including those materials described as ‘geopolymers’, as a possible alternative to Portland cement in bulk construction applications. These materials undoubtedly hold significant potential for use as part of a future toolkit of sustainable cements to enable the world to meet its needs for infrastructure, housing and societal development. This paper will briefly discuss some of the issues which continue to arise around the design, scale-up and use of alkali-activated cements and concretes (collectively ‘alkali-activated materials’), and highlight some areas in which gains may potentially be made through the application of these materials. Keywords: Alkali-activated materials, geopolymers, sustainable cements
